Who We Are

Scythian started several years ago as nothing more than a group of street performers. Raised playing classical music, necessity drove Scythian to play at street corners in hopes of earning a few bucks for gas money. Although the need for petrol got Scythian started, it was the great times they had and the appreciative listeners they met that kept them going. It was through the encouragement of these friends that Scythian became a full fledged band and we thank you. So with no further ado, here's the band:

Danylo
a.k.a.: Danu
Age: 20's
Instrument: Rythym Guitar, Accordion

Danu was raised playing classical piano and won Star Search in 1986. After several years and six hernias, he realized that the piano was not portable. So he opted for the next best thing - the guitar. Danu now has found his niche playing the Celtic rythym guitar and has been known to dabble with instruments such as the accordion, tin whistle and jaw harp.

Danu has managed to graduate from college and now sells high end floors in the Metro area. Hey, if you need cork or bamboo floors, let him know.

Joe
a.k.a: Joey
Age: 20's
Instrument: Fiddle, Air Bass

After a serious tanning accident that left him whiter than any man alive, Joe was found on Scythian's door step. Although he could make a white sheet look black, Joe managed to gain a starting spot on the Scythian roster. Joe has a profound love for hamsters and Coors Lite in a Can but this really has nothing to do with the band. Some people say Joey looks like Bono, but others say he looks like the Incredible Hulk (the angry one). If you really want to get under his skin, buy him a drink - he HATES this. By the way, Joey is the only Irish member of the band.

Danny
a.k.a: Schneibs
Age: 20's
Instrument: Lead vocals, Drums, Chain-linked-fence

Danny hails from the Shenandoah Valley of John Denver fame and has won three blue ribbons at the VA State Fair for musical arm wrestling. Actually, Danny is growing in popularity in the Shenandoah valley, where he performs solo gigs at local wineries and pubs.

Danny has been a long time friend of the other Scythian band members and has really added an element that was sorely missing - talent.

Alex
Instrument: Fiddle, Bass, Harmonica, Mandolin

Alex is the instrumental juggernaut of Scythian. He has been known to ravage entire towns with nothing more than his fiddle. Actually, Alex spent four months wandering the Irish the country side picking up Irish fiddle tunes which form the core of Scythian's eclectic play list. Not much more than that...

A Longer Band Bio...

When people hear "Scythian" they pause for a moment and think, "What? Star Wars?" Not wanting to get sued for copyright infringement the band has agreed, for the first time ever and under advice from their attorney, to disclose the origin of their name. The answer, in fact, is simple: neglecting the word's linguistically pre-Mesopotamian roots and post-modern use, they just believe it sounds cool, and Irish (especially the "ish" part). Which is important for a band that plays mostly Celtic music but sometimes strays into sounds from Gypsy to Klezmer, with notes in between.

Scythian had a very modest beginning. In the summer of 2002 a band of brothers - no, they were not really a band yet, but they were brothers - discovered that they had the right things in common: they were hopelessly unemployed; they were all living together in the same house (a shocking discovery for two of them); and they were each forced to play instruments from an early age (also a shocking discovery for two of them). Being classical musicians by training - which means that they were lovingly nurtured to be hyper-neurotic narcissistic perfectionists - each had graduated into that time of their lives known to professional musicians as the, "Why-don't-we-just-drink-some-beer-and-watch-every-single-match-of-the-2002-World-Cup?" stage. Fortunately someone suggested they play a jig or two together, and after realizing that: (1) hot water really would be nice in the winter, and (2) they could still avoid doing anything with even the appearance of productive work, the brothers took to playing in the streets of Old Town Alexandria, VA. It was as simple as a boy and his dog; except, there were several boys, a few girls, a gaggle of instruments, and no dog.

The band, which has a reputation for testing hypotheses with friends (e.g. "We posit we can jump from the deck through the window and into your bedroom. Okay, we were wrong. Get a doctor"), and is known to be the most fun one can have - legally - in our nation's capital, consists of: Alex (Violin); Joe (Violin); Dan (Guitar/Keyboard); Danny (Vocals/Drums); and joined occasionally by Larissa (Bodhran/Percussion); and Melanie (Violin/Mandolin/Flute).

Scythian is just on the verge of updating the site with gig dates, pics and cd info and more - drop us an email and we'll notify you when all pistons are firing...
